Our Story
From Our Founder
Hey, I am Jim LaVine, founder of Rocky Mountain Burl. I started working in the redwood furniture business in the 1970s. As a custom builder, I worked for Stohan’s on Cannery Row in Monterey, CA.
After our move to Wyoming in 1982, I opened a redwood furniture company in Cody. In 1984, we moved to Riverton, where I worked in the satellite business and continued with redwood furniture as a side business.
I bought 72 redwood stumps in 1991 and have been using an Alaskan mill to chop them up ever since. I am down to 10 stumps left. Combining the redwood with the Wyoming woods is something I thoroughly enjoy.
I want to pass my skills on to a younger generation when I retire. This is why I have been training a young man to build for the last four years.
